Boston fashion designer Luna Joachim has always loved fashion. But, she didn’t take the plunge into the industry until a series of harrowing brain tumor surgeries caused her to re-evaluate her priorities.

“They told me that most likely I would not be able to walk, and I’d end up in a wheelchair. I said uh-uh, not me,” says Joachim. “After all of that, I decided I wanted to do what I love. I love fashion, so I opened a boutique.”

Specifically, Joachim loves 1950s fashion. Her store, L’Accent Boutique, in Brookline, is full of skirts, gloves, elaborate hats, crinolines and more. If Jackie O. wore it, Joachim designs it.

“It’s the classiness of it. I feel like women used to be dignified and to dress themselves so beautifully, so respectfully,” says Joachim. “That’s what I like about it.”

The Boston fashion designer’s signature pieces are demure, full-skirted dresses that she produces in very small batches to keep the looks exclusive. And last year, Joachim debuted a slightly more casual, but still elegant, line for every day. She says she’ll be adding new designs to that collection for Fall 2019. Joachim designs everything herself and then has it produced in high-quality fabrics to meet her luxury market.

Despite the niche style, inclusion is very important to Joachim. “Every woman can wear my dresses. I make sure of that,” she says. “I make them for different shapes and different sizes.”

New items include original bags and silk scarves, which Joachim designs and has made in Italy. The bags are a busy woman’s best friend. Each, elegant exterior separates seamlessly from a genuine leather interior. You can swap styles throughout the day without sacrificing quality. It’s also handy for cleaning the bag.

Joachim’s next collection debuts on the runway in October during Boston Fashion Week 2019. She hopes all her pieces make women feel spectacular.

“When you say, ‘woman,’ it says so much. We are so magical.” And, now, we can look magical, too.
