Time to shop the fall fashion trends, if you’re in need of stocking up some styles. And, in order to be fashion-forward this season, you actually have to look back. The ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, even the 1800s (yes, the Victorian age), all have a say in today’s catwalks and style scene.
Here are a few blast-from-the-past trends to add to your modern-day closet.
Puffy Sleeves
Donning the gown of a Victorian lady of leisure is impractical, but you can still channel her romantic vibe. In fact, designers are in love with puffy sleeves. They were all over the NYFW F/W runways (think Marc Jacobs and Kate Spade). How much of a statement you want to make is up to you.

Lots of Leather
Skirts, dresses, pants, bustiers — you name it. Leather is in this season and its color spectrum runs the gamut from blush to black. Temper the instinctual bad ass nature of this rock star by pairing it with a soft cotton or cashmere accent piece for day-to-night glam. Go for real-deal investment pieces or keep within your budget with stylish faux.

A retro revival of the ’90s, paper bag pants come in all fabrics, from denim to wool. This fall fashion trend definitely has plenty of volume with extra material at the waist cinched with a belt or tie. Important style tip: keep your top form-fitted (hello, on-trend body suit) for a flattering silhouette.

Prosperity Denim atAnimal Anything
Going head-to-toe animal print is not for the faint at fashion, but the look is great on a belt or shoe to elevate your outfit’s style with a subtle pop. Snakeskin leads the pack for this trend, but leopard is coming up close behind and is a fantastic choice for a cardigan or loafers, when paired with black pants and a simple white tee.

While the DIY-style of tie-dye remains firmly in the ’70s, tie-dye prints are everywhere this season — shopping app LiketoKnow.it’s “tie-dye shirt” searches have increased 900 percent in the past few months. Whether it’s Prabal Gurung, Prada or Stella McCartney, the more modern approach is less hippy floral, more sophisticated for the color combos.
