Fashion is fickle, but there’s one trend from last year that has awakened from hibernation just in time to roar through the thick of fall: the shearling-lined shoe.
Gucci started it in 2018 with its quintessential Jordaan fur loafers. But this fall, the fur-meets-shoe trend is everywhere.
From mules to strappy sandals, high-end designers such as 3.1 Phillip Lim and Miu Miu walk side-by-side with lower price points at Target and Free People, trimming even the barest of styles with fur.
Whether it’s subtly lined (think UGG) or the main event (Muppet-worthy Harper Mule by Madewell in Mongolian shearling), fur has stepped into the spotlight.
It might look cute, but is this fad a furry friend or foe? Truth: The upkeep might make you think twice before donning. While all that decadent fluff looks rich and touchable upon first wear, as these shoes become loved, they could start to look loved.
Even high-priced items have a high risk of matting. And, given the messy nature of Boston’s fall-into-winter weather, locals probably won’t cozy up to this concept for more than a quick season.
