We’ve all been there. It’s New Years Eve, the media has been hyping it for weeks, and you’re tired from working, keeping the kids busy over break, and/or recovering from Christmas. The last thing you want to do is squeeze into an uncomfortable dress and spend a fortune having dinner or go to a party with every other person in Boston. Relax, put your feet up and be mindful of your sanity. We put together some ideas for you about ringing in the New Year without even having to leave your house.
Binge a New Show
What better way to get inspired for 2019 than by drooling over Midge’s outfits in the new season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? Or, by catching up on The Handmaid’s Tale or whichever show you’ve been meaning to watch and just haven’t had the time to. Better yet, go old-school and watch a show or movie from a decade or two ago. Pop some popcorn, put on your coziest loungewear, and settle in for a night of television bliss.
Host a Game Night
Bring the party to you by hosting a low-key event like a game night for friends. No elaborate dinners or backbreaking preparation, just a few snacks, a little wine and some good company. Whether you go raunchy with Cards Against Humanity or classic with Scrabble, or a thousand-piece puzzle you’ve had in the closet for, literally, ever, this is a casual way to socialize without the burden of heavy duty hostess-ing.
Review Your 2018 Memories
Take some time to remember all the wonderful moments you experienced in 2018. Scroll through your camera roll to review all the pictures, videos and memories you may have forgotten about in the chaos of everyday life. If you’re really feeling the gratitude, write down all the wonderful achievements from your year in a notebook so you can review them when things get challenging in the New Year.
Clean The House
For some people cleaning can be very cathartic. Position yourself for 2019 by finally cleaning out the freezer or re-organizing your closet. If you’re not so much into getting down and dirty, wipe out your inbox or finally unsubscribe from all those irritating e-mails that are bogging your Gmail down. Even just 30 minutes of effort can make a big difference when you wake up tomorrow organized and ready for the next challenge.
Make One of Those Crazy Pinterest Recipes
You know all those elaborate recipes you save in your Pinterest for “when you have company?” Forget company, make one of them now, all for yourself. It can be as simple as meal prepping for the week (which you never have time for) or as elaborate as three-tiered mousse cake. If you don’t want to deal with a messy kitchen afterwards, try making the most extravagant cheese board ever. No judgment; in fact, can we come over?
Sleep
Let’s be real, midnight on January 1 looks the same as midnight any other day, and you’ve seen your fair share. What you need even more than a champagne headache and a 12 o’clock kiss is a good night of rest. Put on fresh PJs and curl up early, heck, be in bed by 8 p.m. Unwind with a book, put your phone on Do Not Disturb mode and spoil yourself with eight-plus hours of beauty sleep.
